This is a Love Story, Jessica Thompson

When I was employed I used to date a colleague. It was fun because we always see each other at work, we could email each other non-stop and talk about how we liked each other, we could go to lunches together, and we even had almost the same circle of friends. Needless to say, it didn’t work out. And that’s basically the worse part of having a colleague ex-lover. But what’s worst is when you suddenly learn that your relationship didn’t work out because your partner was actually working out another affair with one of your colleagues as well.

If you have experienced this, I am sure you would agree with Nick Redland, the male protagonist of this devastatingly cute story, This is a Love Story. I haven’t read any reviews about this book – I was just walking down the aisle of a bookstore when the book caught my eye. It’s a fun novel, oozing with Brit lingo. It’s new adult lit as the characters are in their twenties. However, it was lightly written, the way teens and adults could relate.

The flow of the story is a bit annoying at first. I kinda grew tired of Nick’s and Sienna’s self-denials, their constant battles with themselves as to how the other one might possibly be in love with the other and the fact that one is always waiting for the other to say something about the other’s feelings. But it wasn’t just the only love angle of the story, which I think made it fascinating. There was also Sienna’s dad, and the homeless Pete, who had both received a different kind of love. A love that is unconditional, and a love that is full of compassion and care.

All in all, the story gave me a rollercoaster of emotions. I laughed at how Nick’s brain works and was a bit annoyed by the way he thinks and it made me wonder if all guys think like that! I was moved when Sienna tried to help the homeless Pete. I cried when Sienna had her share of loss, and I sort of think about falling in love at how Nick described Sienna as something that a writer like Shakespeare had tried to immortalize a long time ago. It’s indeed, a kind of read anyone might enjoy.

Love is an overwhelming, all-consuming force, and when it’s genuine you can’t really ignore it. No matter how long it takes. It knocks down on your door by force. It keeps you awake at night. It plagues your thoughts and burns your soul.
